CRA Concrete Society Shortlist 2022
The CRA Concrete Society Award nominations have been judged and we have three shortlisted nominees! Congratulations to all who have been shortlisted and thank you to everyone who submitted a nomination this year, it was a tough year for the judges to narrow it down to a top three.
The 2022 shortlisted projects are:
Concrete Repairs Limited (CRL) – Boulby Mine Man Riding Shaft Tower Repairs (External and Internal Works)
Boulby Mine on the north-east coast is the world’s first and only Polyhalite mine, and the UK’s deepest mine at 1200 metres. The main shaft building is a 50-year-old cast-in situ concrete structure, with an external elevation extending 45 metres above ground. Its coastal location and sulphides from the mine contributed to reinforcement corrosion, compounded by high internal levels of humidity. As principal contractor, CRL had to draw on their extensive technical knowledge, highly trained resources and management expertise in structural repairs, cathodic protection and carbon-fibre strengthening.
Gunite – Segro Park (former Nestlé factory)
This project comprised the complete repair and part reconstruction of a badly damaged façade at Unit 4 of the old Nestlé factory in Hayes, Middlesex, dating back to 1914 and categorised as a historically important industrial structure by Historic England. The complete programme of structural repair and protection involved concrete repair and protection techniques including corrosion management to extend the life of the structure for a minimum of 20 years. Subcontractor Gunite tackled a range of issues to save the building’s façade through a comprehensive, end-top end programme of repairs.
Mackenzie Construction – Treated Water Storage (TWS) Point Repairs
Client Scottish Water asked Mackenzie Construction to collaborate on this pan-Scotland project to repair 137 treated water storage tanks on both the mainland and islands. The scope of the project included internal and external refurbishment works to prevent ingress and egress. During peak delivery, Mackenzie had more than 35 squads working across Scotland, with the back-up of a 20-strong support team. Challenges included seasonal tourism at the height of pandemic staycations, and keeping works on track during Scottish winter weather.
Good luck to all shortlisted nominees at The Concrete society awards which will be held on the 16th November 2022 in London.
